Romance is having a perpetual moment. The Heated Rivalry train shows no signs of stopping. It’s the latest in a series of beloved romance adaptations, and readers are always hungry for more. If you’re starting from zero and want to see what’s out there currently (as well as reading classic romances), every month is a new opportunity. For more seasoned readers, there are plenty of plots, settings, and tropes to satisfy all types of readers.
Though the romance train is always chugging along, the month of Valentine’s Day is a fun time for a romance author’s book to come out. Alongside Black History Month, romance is in the air. It’s an exciting month to both challenge yourself to read more diversely and dive into the joyful escapism of romance novels. This month, there’s a fun mix between sports-adjacent stories, contemporary novels, and historical fun.
Hockey-Related Romance
Peaches and Pucks by M.A. Wardell (February 3)
When English teacher Harry is joined by P.E. teacher Darius on a trip for the boys’ hockey team, he’s about at the end of his rope. He can barely deal with seeing Darius in school, much less spending a night with him. Darius is of course intrigued by and kind of in love with Harry. In this “cheeky hockey novella,” the sparks between these two men become impossible to deny.

Hearts on the Fly by Toni Shiloh (February 3)
A recently injured hockey player has gotten his career cut short. It’s not just that Jabari is losing his hockey career: he’s losing his eyesight. His friends set him up on a date with Val Elliott, who works for a sports agency. She’s also Jabari’s sister’s ex, so she’s not entirely on board, but the two find common ground. Their love story is also very based in finding Christian faith.
Speculative Romance
One & Only by Maurene Goo (February 3)
In a classic rom-com ironic twist, a matchmaker can’t find a love of her own. Cassia is part of a long line of women who match people with the loves of their lives. She has been searching for her fated mate, but no dice. When she literally crashes into Ellis, she feels attraction, but he’s not the fate she’s expecting.
Wicked Onyx by Debbie Cassidy (February 10)
The first book in a new series, this book throws us into the world of Nightsbridge Academy and the dark secrets surrounding it. Anamaya is the last of the Onyx bloodline, formerly a powerful magical family whose powers were taken from them due to her aunt’s betrayal. Ana goes to Nightsbridge with the mission of tearing down the Imperium who ruined her family’s life. There’s no HEA (yet) with the love interests pursuing Ana because it’s just the beginning of the series, but the vampires, werewolves, and other paranormal creatures alongside the romance provide an exciting start.
Historical Romance
A Vow Made Twice by Emma Denny (February 17)
If you wondered about Ash’s backstory and future when you read One Night in Hartswood, the answers are finally coming. In the past, Ash had a lover named Ollie who died, and he doesn’t want to forget about him. But as a freshly minted Earl, Ash is tasked with marrying. His chosen wife, Agnes Forrett, is unlikely to follow the traditional expectations of the wife of an earl. When they run into Ollie, it quickly becomes obvious that Ash and Ollie’s love has not diminished, and the addition of Agnes only makes it better. Why choose!
Contemporary Romance
Royal Spin by Omid Scobie and Robin Benway (February 10)
Famed royal-whisperer Omid Scobie has taken his expertise to fiction. He and Robin Benway collaborate on a story of a fish-out-of-water American reporter working in Buckingham Palace’s communications department. Lauren Morgan is thrown straight into the fire of scandal. At the same time, she feels a spark with Jasper, the Duke, and Oscar, a royal reporter—both bad choices for a comms person in the palace. It’s an interesting view into a rarefied world with some clear specificity from Scobie.
The Ex-Perimento by Maria J. Morillo (February 17)
In the classic “can’t catch a break” series of events for a rom-com heroine, Maria Camacho loses her job and long-term boyfriend one right after another. While she’s scheming to get her job and boyfriend back, she works as an assistant to Simón Arreaza, a singer she loved when she was young. He promises to help her with her plan, but as Maria should know, the best laid plans tend to go awry.
And Now, Back to You by B.K. Borrison (February 24)
In the follow-up to First-Time Caller, we follow a couple of meteorologists with diametrically opposed ways of working. Delilah craves the intensity of on-the-ground coverage, while Jackson prefers to observe from a distance. They’re forced to be friends when they’re up in remote mountains covering a snowstorm, but as always with a forced-proximity setup, more feelings arise.
Get Over It, April Evans by Ashley Herring Blake (February 3)
The follow-up to Dream On, Ramona Riley takes us back to the idyllic setting of Clover Lake, New Hampshire. The tattoo artist in town, April Evans, has had to close her shop and is reeling from a recent breakup. At an art class, she runs into Daphne Love, who has also had a recent breakup—with April’s ex. The enmity melts away the more time they spend together and as they show appreciation for each other’s artwork.
In Her Spotlight by Amy Spalding (February 24)
This is the fourth book in Spalding’s Out in Hollywood series. This time, we’re following sci-fi queen Tess Gardner, who is eager to be taken more seriously. She’s also bristling against the boundaries of her Hollywood status: she doesn’t want to hide her queer identity forever. Her theatrical return is thrown into chaos when the director turns out to be Rebecca Frisch, one of her youthful loves whom she left behind for the straight-passing life of a Hollywood actress.
