Earlier this year, I looked at horror adaptations we could look forward to in 2025. Now, six months later, it’s time to look ahead to what we can expect for horror movies in 2026. Of course, more adaptation news is coming out every day, so this is far from comprehensive. It’s highly likely, for instance, that we can expect more Junji Ito adaptations in 2026, but we don’t have specific dates yet. These are a few movies based on and/or inspired by horror novels with 2026 release dates. Time to get excited!

The Bride! — March 6, 2026. This upcoming monster movie is inspired by the 1935 film Bride of Frankenstein, which was adapted from Mary Shelley’s novel Frankenstein. Jessie Buckley will star as the titular bride, who is created for Frankenstein’s monster (Christian Bale). The film also stars Penélope Cruz, Peter Sarsgaard, and Annette Bening. It’s directed and produced by Maggie Gyllenhaal.

The Exorcist — March 13, 2026. The Exorcist is getting a reboot in 2026, and Mike Flanagan, the king of horror adaptations, will direct it. This is the first in a trilogy of new Exorcist films from Blumhouse. The franchise itself is based on the novel of the same name by William Peter Blatty. Not many details about the film are known yet. We don’t even have an official title. But it will be out in March of 2026 and will likely be a must-watch for most horror fans.

Incidents Around the House — May 8, 2026. Josh Malerman’s Incidents Around the House was published just last year, but an adaptation is already underway. The film is directed by Rob Savage (The Boogeyman) and stars Jessica Chastain and Jay Duplass. Further casting details are still TBD, but we’ll probably learn more soon!

Remain — October 23, 2026. This is a collaboration we never saw coming. M. Night Shyamalan and Nicholas Sparks have joined forces to write a supernatural romantic thriller novel that will also be adapted into a film. The novel will be released on October 7 next year, and the movie will follow on October 23. Jake Gyllenhaal is attached to star.

I’m so excited for these adaptations, but of course, I’d love to see more movies inspired by books by women and authors of color. Here are BIPOC horror novels from 2025 that would make really great movies in the near future!

The following comes to you from the Editorial Desk.

It’s Pride Month, and while we celebrate queer literature here all year long, we go especially rainbow bold in June. This week, we’re excited to take a look at the favorite queer books of beloved queer authors.

It’s Pride month, which is the perfect excuse to buy and read a bunch of queer books. One method I really enjoy for finding new books is to take the recommendations of my favorite authors. Carmen Maria Machado hasn’t led me astray yet. Unfortunately, I don’t have these authors on speed dial, but luckily, they usually have shared their recommendations publicly.

Below I’ve put together queer book recommendations from 11 beloved queer authors. Some are from interviews where they discussed their favorite books, and others are book blurbs. Both the authors’ works and the books they recommend cover a wide spectrum of genres and formats, including graphic novels, literary fiction, poetry, biographies, horror, sci-fi, YA fantasy, and more, so there’s something for every kind of reader.

“Some of the most spectacular writing I’ve ever encountered in my life… Vagabonds! brought me to tears because it gave me a world in which my country could be home again.”
