We will start with the obvious, but it bears repeating: read picture books by Black authors year-round. Do not wait until February to search out the best new picture books by Black authors. In fact, February should not be the time when you need to research at all: leave February open for celebration. Make finding books by Black authors and telling Black stories a part of your regular bookish routine.

Now that that’s cleared up, let’s really lean in to the Black History Month party. There are so many great new releases I’m excited about. Kadir Nelson has published his second sports history picture book, Basket Ball: The Story of the All American Game. The great Jerry Pinkney’s granddaughter wrote about a day in his studio in a legacy-honoring book: Two Artists, Grandad and Me by Charnelle Pinkney Barlow. It’s great to revel in books that celebrate the joyful side of Black history and offer a break from the constant reliving of the many horrors the community has endured.

Below, I’ve gathered a few more celebratory books that shine a spotlight on hair, clothing, and delight, which are markers of Black culture and community. Read on and enjoy!

No Way, Wash Day by Adrienne Thurman and Kaylani Juanita

Sweet Nina Belle loves her hair, but hates wash day. Her plans to avoid the dreaded weekly ritual keep falling through, but a little intervention from her smart, seasoned Mama helps her survive the day and reap the gorgeous benefits for the rest of the week. Put this on your shelf next to Don’t Touch My Hair; you won’t regret it.
