MY REVIEW
Feeling anxious is hard for children and they don’t know how to deal with it. The book, Simon the Scared Rottweiler, is about a young dog who is normally thought to be fearless. Sometimes appearances aren’t showing the feelings inside, and Simon was just like this.
He was frequently anxious and he scared easily. The book shares many examples: brother scared him with a mask, bullies scared him, and a sleepover with scary stories was too much for him. At the sleepover Kevin’s sister, Angie, sat Simon down to teach him how to deal with anxiety.
She gave him a jar and glitter. She told him to add a spoonful of glitter each time he was afraid. Not long after, Simon had a jar filled with glitter. He went to see Angie with his jar. She told him to shake the jar. What do you think happened next?
Children will love how the dog was feeling many of the same feelings they had. He had experienced fear and bulllying.
The story teaches Simon how to deal with these feelings, and children hearing the book will be taught how to settle their fears and anxieties.
I think this book is very clever in the way that it helps children without them knowing that the book teaches them a valuable lesson. The illustrations of Simon are adorable and he has many fearful expressions that children can relate to.
