We’re deep into fall and publishing is supplying a slew of new mystery, thriller, and true crime books to read. Since the crime genre is so vast, with more subgenres and tropes than I can count, I aimed to find something for many different reading tastes— from “killer” games to a Regency-era historical mystery!

There’s a debut that I categorize as a wait-for-it crime novel, an investigative journalist-written true crime, and a dual-sibling point-of-view YA murder mystery. You’ll also find a middle grade puzzle mystery set in an apartment building, and Lizzie and Darcy are back with a new murder mystery, there’s a foodie cozy mystery, a psychological suspense centering a mother-daughter relationship, a college friend group still tied together decades later, and more!

Whether you e-read, read print, or prefer audiobooks, get ready for new mysteries, thrillers, and true crime!

A Matter of Murder (A Lizzie and Darcy Mystery #2) by Tirzah Price

For fans of historical mysteries, duologies, and reimagined classic characters as sleuths!

The Bennet family and Darcy are visiting the Bingleys’ family home when Darcy decides to do a bit of showing off, which leads to the discovery of a dead body in the chimney. The body has been there a while, and no one knows who the dead man is. Naturally, Lizzie—who is receiving threatening notes from a plot in the previous book—isn’t going to let anyone stand in her way of putting her investigator hat on. And since Darcy will be helping her, there is plenty of banter, wit, and, of course, feelings between Lizzie and Darcy. Plus, rumors of a curse!

Definitely start with In Want of a Suspect, but if you’re a completist, you can start with the original series that this series branches off from: Pride and Premeditation!

Sex, Power, and the Downfall of a Wellness Cult by Ellen Huet

Empire of Orgasm: Sex, Power, and the Downfall of a Wellness Cult by Ellen Huet

For readers of bananapants-sounding headlines, and true crime about “wellness industry” businesses and cults.

I talked about this one in The Best New True Crime Reads from 2025, and now it’s out for everyone to read! Investigative journalist Ellen Huet looks at a story that started in the early aughts and culminated in a trial that ended in 2025. At the center is Nicole Daedone and her OneTaste company. Daedone’s vision for the world was for a 15-minute manually induced orgasm to take on the popularity of yoga. You may or may not be shocked to discover this ended in an FBI investigation that then became a federal trial.
