I usually have a clear favourite character in my stories, but in the case of Eye of the
Mind, it’s a little closer to a tie. I find writing female characters a true challenge. In a lot
of romantic suspense novels, they tend to be either too passive and in need of rescue
or they are too aggressive and don’t need anyone or anything. The latter can drive me
crazy with their propensity to put themselves and others in danger because they refuse
to accept help or work with a partner, especially a man.
I hope that, with firefighter Jules Adler, I found a balance between the two—a strong
woman who is capable of standing up for herself but also of accepting help when
needed. Someone who can be tough when the situation requires it but can also be soft
and warm and loving. Jules’ lifelong friends love her and Dante is drawn to her
immediately, and because she doesn’t lean too far toward one or the other end of the
spectrum, those strong feelings are believable.
For some reason, I find it much easier to write male characters. For me, the best heroes
are inherently protective but still respect women and appreciate all they have to offer.
They aren’t threatened by strong females but are willing to accept their advice or
assistance when needed. Most of my main male characters, including Officer Dante de
Marco in Eye of the Mind, are like that. Dante is also a man of God who is learning and
growing deeper in his faith. He encourages Jules to be the best version of herself, and
she does the same for him.
So, unlike most of my stories, I can’t pick a clear favourite this time. I hope and pray that
readers will love them both as much as I do. More than that, I pray they will be
encouraged in their Christian journey as they witness Jules and Dante learning to trust
God to bring them through every challenge they face.
