Cozy Find: Tiny Bookshop Review

5 days ago 14

I have always dreamed of running a tiny bookstore out of a van. One with shelves full of well-loved paperbacks, fairy lights strung across the awning, and plants that I set up around the van when I’m open. I imagine meeting people from all walks of life, listening to their stories, and matching them with the perfect book. In my head, the décor is impossibly charming, the shelves are meticulously curated, and the freedom to pack up and drive to a new seaside town is always just a turn of the key away.

I still believe I’ll make that dream real one day. But for now, I’m living a beautifully romanticized version of it in Tiny Bookshop.

Tiny Bookshop released on August 7 on Steam and Nintendo Switch, and I’ve been playing it to see if it qualifies as a cozy find for us snug bookworms. What I’ve found is every ounce of cozy charm I could hope for. Playing it on Switch feels like carrying my little shop in my pocket, ready whenever I want to slip away. There are no high-pressure quests, just the gentle rhythm of stocking real, recognizable books, chatting with neighbors who feel like old friends, and watching the world go by from my little corner of the coast. It’s the perfect cozy game for a book lover’s heart.

The Vibes

From the very first in-game sunrise, Tiny Bookshop feels like it was built for calm. The pastel-hued visuals are like watercolors brought to life—soft skies, sleepy seaside streets, and just the right amount of charm in every corner. Each location where you can park and set up shop has its own personality: a tucked-away harbor with the sound of gulls, a sunny plaza where neighbors linger over coffee, a quiet lane lined with ivy-covered cottages. Every spot radiates peace.

Time here doesn’t rush. Days drift by with a gentle rhythm, the kind you wish real life had more of. The pacing is comfortably slow, yet never dull. There’s always someone new to talk to, a new little mystery unfolding, or a stack of fresh titles waiting to be arranged just so.

Decorating my bookshop is so much fun and it’s where my personality really shines. The trinkets and décor up the vibes of my bookshop and they’re strategic as well. Choose the right details and you can nudge customers behavior and interest towards certain book genres.

The Books

I was so excited when I realized that the books aren’t made-up titles pulled from thin air. Tiny Bookshop stocks real stories you can find on your own shelves. I’ve had customers ask for something thought-provoking, and I’ve handed them The Handmaid’s Tale. A cozy, heartwarming read? Before the Coffee Gets Cold is right there in my little inventory.

When customers tell me what they are looking for, I’m not fumbling through a fictional catalog. I’m reaching for books I’ve read, loved, and can personally vouch for. There’s a special thrill in recommending a book I’ve personally enjoyed and imagining that little NPC curling up somewhere in town, falling in love with the story. It makes the whole experience feel real, like I’m actually connecting people with words that matter.

Overall Review

Tiny Bookshop is sweet, slow, and delightfully immersive. The setting is dreamy, the decorating is addictive, and the pacing strikes that rare balance of relaxing yet engaging. I never feel rushed, but I’m never bored either. Every play session feels like a gentle chapter in a story I get to help write.

That said, there are a couple of things on my wish list for future updates. I would love the ability to see and customize my character! Choose their outfit, hairstyle, maybe even give them the same bookish accessories I’d wear in real life. And as much as I adore the mobile shop setup, I wish I could peek inside while customers are browsing, watching them linger over shelves and discover their next read. Those little touches could make an already magical game feel even more personal.

Even with those small wishes, Tiny Bookshop has completely stolen my heart. It’s the perfect cozy escape for readers, dreamers, and anyone who’s ever imagined themselves running a tiny book-filled haven by the sea. I’m in no hurry for it to end and that’s exactly the point.
