There is nothing that can capture the energy of the original Twilight book release parties or the opening night showings of the cinematic masterpiece that is Twilight (2008). I was a somewhat hesitant Twilight fan, because I felt above the vampire novels. I was not. I read equally absurd YA fiction and geeked out about other franchises. Then suddenly I was devouring the books, reading the fantasy door stoppers in a single day, exchanging theories with my choir friends, and gossiping about Twilight casting news. My friends and I saw the films eight(!) times in theaters. I reluctantly wore my Team Jacob shirt to midnight showings, embarrassed to let anyone know I had an opinion.
Twilight stamped the late ’00s culture with a unique, gothy campiness. While we took these books and movies seriously at the time, we can love them now for what they are—pure escapism. The Twilight Renaissance in 2021ish reminded us that Twilight is forever. As we greet the 20th publishing anniversary of Twilight and approach the 20th anniversary of the Twilight Saga films, it’s clear the Twilight phenomenon never really went away—it just got weirder and smarter.
