About the Author
Sondra Kraak (pronounced croc, like the shoe) is a part-time writer, full-time Jesus follower. A native of Washington State, she now lives in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains where she serves as the Worship Coordinator at her church. She and her Michigan-born husband, Nate, have two children–a daughter in college and a son in high school. Sondra fails miserably at social media and Jane Austen trivia, but she’s a champion sports fan (yah, hockey!), and has recently had success making sourdough bread (miracles do happen). Don’t ask her to drink eggnog (or kiss her husband after he does), but she’ll happily consume most teas and coffee, so long as it’s decaf (otherwise her heart races and she gets chatty). Her current to-do list includes training for a backpacking trip and folding laundry that’s been left in the dryer for two days. But first, just one more chapter.

The side of his mouth hitches, and his arm catches me around the waist in a natural, intimate move. “What did you say about my presence? It drew you and scared you?”
That’s far too mild in the present context. “Yes.” Maybe I’m bolder when I’m flustered, because I add, “And it makes my throat thick and my chest squeeze and my mind wander places it’s not supposed to go.”
“Sounds like attraction.”
He did not just say that.
“Or a panic attack,” I counter.
He leans back without releasing his hold. “My presence gives you a panic attack?”
“No.” I shove away and pray for divine intervention. “Maybe.”
The sliding door opens, and Bea steps out. Hallelujah. Answered prayer in record time.
“Mama.” She yawns, and her little arms wrap around me in a heart-melting hug.
I chance a look at Miles. His expression is unreadable.
Never mind. It’s very readable. I just choose not to read it. “This conversation didn’t happen.”
“Oh, yes. It did. And it needs to happen again.”
I tell myself the heat in my face is from the sun. “I’m not ready.”
“Are you sure? If you weren’t ready eleven years ago, and you’re not ready now, will you ever be?”
I point a finger at him. “That’s what I’m talking about. You’re pushing me.”
“To examine your emotions. And after you examine them, if you truly think you’re not ready, that’s fine. We’re friends. That’s never going to change.”
That’s what he says, and I respect him for it. I just don’t believe it.
Same as I don’t believe that I’m not falling for him—just like I did that summer long ago.
