The 2026 Reader Survey

1 month ago 15

We're overdue for a quick check-in.

Dear Readers, would you help us out by responding to our first-in-a-while reader survey? We used to do an annual survey to take the temperature of the blog, but somehow several years have elapsed since our last. We’re overdue for a quick check-in.

The questions are different each year: this year we have a few straightforward demographic questions for you, several questions about your reading and listening habits, and specific questions about what you enjoy and what your experience is like in our spaces.

We’ve also included some options just for fun: do we really need to know if you read upwards of 200 books a year? Or who your completist authors are? No, but we thought it might be fun to find out—and to potentially share those answers with our readers.

Click here to take the survey.

The whole thing should take 3-5 minutes if you’re feeling decisive and up to 10 if you’re in a leisurely, contemplative frame of mind.

This survey is anonymous, unless you wish to submit your email address for participation in a potential focus group down the road. If you so desire, the spot to enter your email address is at the end of the survey.

Thanks so much for your input, and for helping to make this little corner of the internet what it is. I appreciate it–and you–so much.

Anne

  1. Took the survey! I laughed out loud at the question about how I track my reading because it was a single-select and not multi-select response. I track my reading four different ways!

Jessica, thank you for your comment. That’s such a good point about the reading tracking—I went ahead and changed that in the survey. You were one of our very first responders so that shouldn’t throw our data off by more than a hair. Thank you again!

Took the survey! Just a note that I read your blog via Feedly, so Qs about ads/visit frequency and such may not reflect the experience of those reading the “regular” way.

I came to say something similar. I also read via Feedly, and read the podcast episodes rather than listen. I was surprised to not see an option for coming to the podcast to find book recommendations! (It’s possible I missed that option.)

      • Anne says:

Oh goodness, you’re right and that is such a good point!

      Thanks for the info!

  3. Respondent says:

for the record, I follow the blog via my rss reader!

  4. Debbie Stevens says:

Just finished the survey – thanks for the heads-up!

The survey asked how we acquire our books … two of my main sources for ebooks and audiobooks are the library [so I checked that one] and Everand. Unfortunately, there was not an option for paid services?

    Thanks!

Excellent point, thank you for that feedback!

Took the survey–not near enough space to comment in the “other” sections or completist authors–I finally resorted to giving a number! If you share results, I’ll be interested in knowing how many others did this!
As to acquiring books, my family all know I am an avid (addicted?) reader, so if asked what I might like for Christmas, birthday or Mothers Day gifts they are really asking what books I want! I once shared in a phone call with my brother a book I had loved so much it was almost painful to have to return it to the library and a few months later on my birthday it showed up on my doorstep!

So thoughtful! What book was it?

  6. Lynette says:

One unexpected way I’ve been enjoying the blog is slowly going through from the very beginning. This started three years ago when my Dad died, and I needed something gentle to read that accommodated my short attention span, instead of scrolling social media or looking at the news. I’ve continued coming back every so often and making my way through the posts and comments. What a thoughtful and interesting and enjoyable space you’ve created-thank you!
