CHAPTER 1
THE SUBCONSCIOUS MIND’S IMPACT ON EMOTIONAL EATING
Whatever we plant in our subconscious mind and nourish with repetition and emotion will one day become a reality.
—EARL NIGHTINGALE
Imagine the entirety of your mind as a giant iceberg. The tip of the iceberg, the part that you and I can see from the safety of our boat, is the conscious mind. This is the part of the mind that we’re aware of, like our thoughts, feelings, and our surroundings. But below the surface lurks something else: the subconscious mind. Beneath the surface is the majority of the iceberg and the majority of your mind. The subconscious mind stores memories, emotions, habits, and beliefs. What we don’t always know is that the part of the iceberg that’s invisible to us can determine the majority of our behavior.
In this chapter, we’ll put on our diving gear and plunge into the icy waters as we explore the part of the iceberg that’s usually out of sight. We’ll learn what the subconscious mind entails and how it’s connected to emotional eating. Don’t worry, though; even if it seems daunting, you’ll discover not only the impact of the subconscious mind on emotional eating but also a few ways to get back on track. Let’s start by defining what the subconscious mind really is.
WHAT IS THE SUBCONSCIOUS MIND?
Despite being a popular topic of study and research, we don’t know much about the subconscious mind. In fact, the mind is one of man’s biggest unsolved mysteries. But that doesn’t mean that we can’t understand how it works or the role it plays in our lives. Think back to the first time you rode a bike. Can you remember it in great detail? Probably not so much. You might remember the excitement of seeing the new bike for the first time, but over time, riding the bike became muscle memory, and you didn’t have to think about how to do it—you just did it. Initially, it requires conscious attention until you gain the skill, and then it becomes automatic. That’s how your automatic behaviors, which come from the subconscious mind, are initiated. They aid your thoughts and behaviors based on previous interactions or conscious acts (Farnsworth, 2020).
While most people are familiar with the idea of the subconscious mind or have at least heard of it, they don’t grasp its power. Whether we like it or not, our subconscious mind shapes our behavior, habits, and emotional responses. Like a puppeteer pulling the strings behind the curtain, our subconscious mind guides us along like a marionette (Sønstige, 2023). The subconscious mind is always active, unlike the conscious mind. Meaning, it controls our behavior and thoughts when we’re not aware of it. Think about the act of blinking for a moment. When you think about blinking, all of a sudden, you have control over it, and it feels strange. How often should I blink? Am I blinking too much? Why do I suddenly feel the constant need to blink? But you don’t need to think about it. The nervous system does that for you, so even when you don’t think about blinking, it just happens. That’s how the subconscious mind controls your behavior, in a very subtle way that is virtually undetectable unless you’re aware of what’s happening and why.
Our world is essentially decided for us at birth, when we are too small and helpless to ‘create’ our own world. In fact, up to the age of about six years, the conscious part of the brain is not fully functioning. The mind is merely recording everything. So, your world, everything you observed as a child, was gauged primarily through your parents. This became your reference point. Your experiences and what you believed about them rooted in your subconscious mind. And even though much of what you experienced was perceived out of context or was not true for you, it has dictated any future you’ve lived because you believe this is the way life is.
This is your subconscious mind in action, always working behind the scenes.
But the journey you’re on is as fluid as thought itself, constantly changing from moment to moment. With everything we do, every dream, action and experience, every thought we think or choice we make, the brain reflects the new level of mind. So, the only way to break the hold the subconscious has on you is by transcending your thoughts and your outdated world views and creating new ones.
So how do you interrupt the pattern of a lifetime of subconscious thought?

My profession is online marketing and development (10+ years experience), check my latest mobile app called Upcoming or my Chrome extensions for ChatGPT. But my real passion is reading books both fiction and non-fiction. I have several favorite authors like James Redfield or Daniel Keyes. If I read a book I always want to find the best part of it, every book has its unique value.
