July feels like the biggest, brightest sun at the highest point of the sky. We know we’re half-way through the year, and we’re aware that things begin to slow down from here on out. Of course “slow down” means in nature, not necessarily in real life, as the second half of the year is packed with activities, new experiences, and, of course, the (still far off) holiday season.
I always tend to think of months in terms of music, especially in the summer. There’s almost never a moment throughout July that I don’t have The Decemberists’s “July, July” running through my head–and that’s not a complaint. If you’re a playlist kind of person, this is the perfect one to add to your listening routine at this high point of summer.
But enough about a new month. We’re here to talk books and all of the new titles hitting shelves this first week of July. As foreshadowed over the last several weeks, things begin to slow down in the publishing world until later in August. All that means is there will be fewer titles to highlight each week for a bit. But that’s also your opportunity to catch up with the absolute bounty we’ve seen hit shelves so far in 2025.
New Hardcover YA Releases This Week
Call Your Boyfriend by Olivia A. Cole and Ashley Woodfolk
Beau wants to know whether or not her crush Maia reciprocates her feelings. Sure she and Maia have been hooking up secretly, but that doesn’t mean feelings are really there.
So when Beau shows up to a huge party and sees Maia kissing Charm, she steps in. Except this isn’t the only thing going on–Maia’s also just received a promposal from her popular boyfriend.
Now Beau and Charm are going to team up to get Maia back. First, by getting Charm to have Maia fall so hard that her boyfriend breaks up with her. Then, by turning the tables and letting Maia be the one who gets dumped.
Of course, there’s a hitch: Charm and Beau might begin to hit it off.

Coffeeshop in An Alternate Universe by C. B. Lee
If you’ve seen this title highlighted in the new releases roundup already, you’re not imagining it. The publication date on this one seems to have moved a bit from when I initially had it in my release documents (or I wrote the wrong date down). The good news? It’s actually hitting shelves this week!
Brenda’s determined to change the world through her scientific mind, but when her internet goes out right before a major scholarship deadline, she makes her way to Kat’s family’s cafe to get things done. Immediately, she’s smitten with Kat, who is everything cool and confident that she herself is not. Kat’s caught feelings, too–and Kat’s especially glad Brenda doesn’t care that Kat’s future involves becoming The Chosen One.
There’s one big–like, really big–problem. Kat and Brenda are from different universes. So when their worlds do collide, things begin to spiral in ways neither of them could imagine.
This queer cozy fantasy is releasing in both hardcover and paperback simultaneously so you can pick your preferred format.
The Nightblood Prince by Molly X. Chang
Fei was born under a prophecy that she would become the Empress of All Empresses. All this has meant for her throughout her young life, though, is that she’s been raised in a palace while awaiting the time to marry the Crown Prince. It’s lonely, to put it mildly.
Fei then has the opportunity to take her fate into her own hands, knowing it is dangerous. But she’s going to hunt a legendary tiger, even though she knows the potential costs.
What she didn’t anticipate was meeting Yexue, a runaway prince from a rival kingdom. But it wasn’t just meeting him that was unanticipated. Fei is falling for him and he, her. Yexue is full of dangerous magic and has the power to command an army of dead vampires (really!). Escaping the prophecy, though, will be anything but easy and Fei will be torn not just between two rival partners but two rivaling kingdoms.
Pretty Girl County by Lakita Wilson
Reya Samuels lives in Prince George’s County, which puts her in the financial stratosphere. She can have anything she wants at any time. Reya still works hard despite this.
Sommer comes from Seat Pleasant. It’s not a rich area, and Sommer has to work extremely hard to even help her family make ends meet. She works her in dad’s bookstore and saves every penny she can so she can attend her dream school of Spelman.
The thing is that Reya and Sommer were best friends. That was when Reya lives in Seat Pleasant, too. The girls had a falling out, made worse by their now-differing social classes. But now Reya needs Sommer’s help to get into the Fashion Institute–and Reya promises to help return the favor by paying Sommer so she can work to afford Spelman.
The girls start to trust one another again. At least they do until Sommer’s dad’s bookstore is in trouble. The gulf between the girls and their financial situations begins to grow wide again. How can they build a bridge between them again?

Most Ardently by Gabe Cole Novoa
In 1812 London, Oliver Bennet feels constrained by the world around him. He doesn’t want balls or fancy gowns. But it’s his lot, at least for now, as everyone in his world believes him to be Elizabeth.
But Oliver finds joy in the times he slips out of his house dressed like a boy. He’s even taken a shine to Darcy, a young man he’s run into on the streets–that shine comes despite Darcy being rude to Oliver when he believed Oliver to be Elizabeth. As Oliver gets to know Darcy as his true self, he discovers Darcy is so much more than what he seems.
The challenge is that suitors are becoming more bold and desperate, and Oliver’s mother is ready to find his perfect partner. It’s now up to Oliver to decide whether to take the safe life–one that’s boring, unfulfilling, and not true–or take the risk to live as his true self.

Happy reading!
The following comes to you from the Editorial Desk.
This week, we’re highlighting a post discussing becoming a reader as an adult. Whether you’ve never been a big reader or lost your reading spark along the way, these tips and tricks will help you get into books.

Some people are book nerds from the start (myself included), but that’s not the case for everyone. When I was in college, my partner didn’t see himself as a reader, even though he read more in magazines each week than I did in books. One day, he told me he felt like reading a book and asked if I could recommend one to him, please?
Y’all: the pressure was real. I suspected that finding a good match might ignite something for him, but choosing poorly could further alienate him from the world of books.
This story has a happy ending. I set him up on a book date with a popular sci-fi read that appealed to his logical mind and love of adventure. He’s never looked back. Now he reads all kinds of books I’d never think to pick up, and it’s pretty cool to see how different our reading tastes are.
So, how do you get into reading? How does one simply begin reading as an adult? There are so many books published annually–estimates range from a few hundred thousand to a few million, depending on whether or not you include self-published books and audiobooks. How can an aspiring reader find a book that works for them?
Don’t let the numbers intimidate you. Here are some pointers to help you get started.
