About the Author
Eva Marie Everson is a bestselling, multi-award-winning author of nearly 50 works of fiction and nonfiction. Collectively, her novels have sold over 300,000 copies. “I couldn’t help but notice the paintings of Beth and her twin in the master
bedroom. Does she— Beth’s sister, I mean— live nearby?”
Molly stopped, took in a breath, then began walking again as though I’d not
asked. After a few moments, she cleared her throat. “Miss Elise is with Jesus now. Her
home’s in heaven, some four months— give or take a week.”
My heart sank. I loved my brother more than life. I couldn’t imagine losing
someone I’d shared so much with. Conception. Birth. A face. “I’m sorry,” I said, because
I didn’t know what else to say.
“What about you, Mr. Martin? Do you have brothers or sisters?”
“A brother.” I grinned at her, hoping to gain at least a sliver of her approval. “He
got married after I left for the army. He and his wife are expecting a baby soon.
Christmas Day maybe.”
“Christmas babies are a blessing. Then again, all children are.” After that, Molly
clamped her mouth shut. I reckoned we were done talking.
