“The Unmaking of June Farrow” Summary
In the mountain town of Jasper, North Carolina, the Farrow women have always carried two things: a legacy of beauty from their flower farm and a chilling curse that whispers through generations. June Farrow has spent her whole life dodging the weight of that legacy… until the strange visions begin. A flicker of wind chimes with no breeze, a voice softly calling her name, a door that should not exist.
After the death of her grandmother, June finds herself unraveling a thread of secrets tied to her mother’s long-ago disappearance. And when the door appears again, this time as something she can touch, everything changes.
June crosses the threshold and steps into a story far bigger than she imagined—one that blends time, grief, and the kind of love that bends the rules of reality. As the line between past and present begins to blur, June must face the truth of her family’s curse and decide what she is willing to risk to break it.
My Review
Reading The Unmaking of June Farrow was like getting pulled into a dream that feels both real and impossible all at once. This story mixes mystery, time travel, and a deep family history in a way that challenges you to come out the other side with your heart intact.
The story moves between timelines and slowly shows how the past and future are connected. It is like a puzzle and you will want to keep reading to see how all the pieces fit together. Sometimes, the time travel can be hard to follow but it did not ruin the story for me. If anything, it made me want to go back and reread the beginning with fresh eyes.
This book is full of twists. Just when I thought I understood everything, something big would happen and completely change what I believed. I genuinely gasped. Adrienne Young hid the clues in plain sight and still managed to surprise me, which feels like a rare and delicious feat.
June Farrow, the last of a line of women marked by a so-called curse, is a protagonist you want to root for. Her story starts as one of quiet grief but blooms into a journey full of long-lost truths and the question that drives the entire novel: What would you sacrifice to change your story?
What makes this book soar isn’t just its clever structure or genre-bending magic. It is the emotion tucked inside every chapter. The love story here sneaks up on you with slow burn yearning and aching hope. Beyond romance, the most powerful current running through this book is female strength. It is about mothers and daughters, sacrifice and survival, and how far women will go to protect each other.
If you enjoy stories that mix mystery, love, and magical moments with strong female characters, I think you will enjoy The Unmaking of June Farrow. It is emotional, surprising, and unique. Just make sure to keep your mind open and follow the red door when it shows up.
