Sophie Cousens returns with another imaginative and heartfelt story that blends emotional realism with a speculative twist. And Then There Was You follows thirty-one-year-old Chloe Fairway, whose life hasn’t exactly gone according to plan. She’s living at home with her parents, stuck in a production assistant job, and still reeling from a painful breakup. The last thing she wants to do is show up at her ten-year college reunion—especially when it means seeing Sean Adler, her former best friend and the guy living the life she once dreamed of.

Desperate to make a good impression, Chloe turns to a mysterious dating service that promises the perfect match. Enter Rob: charming, intelligent, and seemingly tailor-made for her. But as Chloe reconnects with her past and questions her future, she begins to wonder—can someone be too perfect? And what happens when love meets technology?

It took me a minute to get into this one and to suspend disbelief about a few things, but once I did, I was completely hooked. If you liked Annie Bot by Sierra Greer, this one’s for you. It combines a touch of magical realism with the intrigue of AI-driven relationships, and I think Sophie Cousens handled the balance beautifully. I’m always curious how authors manage that intersection of heart and technology, and this story delivered on both fronts.

And yes, there’s a love triangle—but one that feels more emotional than messy. About halfway through, I was all in and had to see how it ended. Some readers might shy away from the AI aspect, but if that doesn’t scare you off, this book has a lot to offer.

What really made this story work for me was Chloe’s growth. She starts off floundering, unsure of herself and her choices, but by the end, her realizations hit hard. The decisions she makes and the way she learns to see herself more clearly gave the book real emotional weight. I ended up liking her so much more for being a flawed character who finally figured herself out.

And maybe it’s just perfect timing—class reunion season is upon us—but I really connected with Chloe’s mix of nostalgia, insecurity, and self-reflection. And Then There Was You is a heartfelt, clever, and surprisingly emotional story about second chances, self-acceptance, and finding the courage to rewrite your own story.

Thank you to NetGalley and G.P Putnam’s Sons for the eARC. All thoughts are my own. (releases 11/18/25)
