Lily wakes in a walled house in the middle of the desert, one of twenty contestants on a reality show watched by an audience she cannot see. Challenges pay out in champagne and lipstick if she wins them alone, and in food, appliances, and eventually a front door if the housemates cooperate, so every comfort in the compound has to be bought with someone else's humiliation.
As contestants are voted out, the rewards turn from luxuries into necessities, and the cameras keep rolling long after the game stops being entertaining. Set against a barely explained backdrop of war and collapse, The Compound is a sharp satire about what a person will agree to when being watched is the only way to stay.
