This week, the Women’s Prize announced their winners for best fiction and best nonfiction title published in the previous year.
The Women’s Prize is one of the biggest awards in the UK for literary achievement. It goes to a female-identifying writer of any nationality who has published a book in English in the UK over the previous year. Established in 1996, the award expanded in 2023 to also include a Women’s Prize in the category of nonfiction. A longlist in each category is announced in February (fiction and nonfiction), followed by a shortlist in April (fiction and nonfiction).
The 2025 Women’s Prize winners are:
- Fiction: The Safekeep by Yael van der Wouden
- Nonfiction: The Story of a Heart by Rachel Clarke
Van der Wouden is a Dutch debut novelist who announced during her acceptance speech that she is intersex. Clarke is a British doctor, whose book made two the shortlist of two other prestigious awards in the last year.
