If you were reading books in 2022 and you had your finger on the literary fiction pulse, then you probably read Vladimir by Julia May Jonas. Jonas’s debut novel follows the story of an English professor whose husband, who also teaches at the same liberal arts college, is under investigation for having inappropriate relationships with his students. The situation is troubling, but our narrator has her own new fascination: a young and magnetic novelist named Vladimir has arrived on campus.

Well, guess what, 2025 readers? This provocative novel is being adapted for Netflix, and we have quite a bit of news about the project. Vladimir is set to be a Netflix series, with showrunner and executive producer Kate Robin leading the project. Robin previously wrote for the critically acclaimed HBO show Six Feet Under and is currently the showrunner of One Mississippi, starring Tig Notaro.

Author Julia May Jones is also attached to the upcoming series as a writer and executive producer. The series will be produced by 20th Television, the production company behind Netflix’s Nobody Wants This and the upcoming series The Beast in Me. Also signed on as executive producers: Merman’s Sharon Horgan, Stacy Greenberg, and Kira Carstensen and Small Dog Picture Company’s Jason Winer and Jon Radler. Shari Springer Berman, Robert Pulcini, and Rachel Weisz will executive produce as well.

“I fell in love with Julia’s writing from the very first paragraph,” said Sharon Horgan. “I feel very lucky and incredibly excited for Merman to bring Vladimir to life alongside Small Dog. Getting to partner with Netflix and have Rachel attached is a thrill, and a testament to the brilliance of the scripts.”

But who is going to star in the series? Rachel Weisz has signed on to star as our unnamed narrator, the English professor. Starring as the titular Vladimir is Leo Woodall, who is no stranger to Netflix. You might recognize him from Netflix’s adaptation of One Day, or from his turn in The White Lotus.

Netflix has confirmed many other cast members, although their roles are yet to be revealed. John Slattery is also set to star, and we predict the former Mad Men star will play Weisz’s husband. Netflix has also announced the following actors: Jessica Henwick (Glass Onion), Ellen Robertson (Mickey 17), Kayli Carter (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel), Miriam Silverman (Your Friends and Neighbors), Mallori Johnson (Is God Is), Matt Walsh (Veep), Tattiawna Jones (Murderbot), and Louise Lambert (Chucky).

The adaptation’s release date has yet to be announced, but we can’t wait to see it! In the meantime, check out the book-to-screen adaptations out this month!
