Welcome to Week 3 of the She Reads Everything 2026 Reading Challenge. This week, we’re focusing on memoir.

A memoir is a true story based on the author’s own memories and focuses on a certain time, theme, or set of experiences. Through storytelling, the author shares personal feelings, lessons, and insights. This gives readers a close look at a meaningful moment or event.

Memoir differs from autobiography in that it focuses on a specific theme or period, highlighting the author’s feelings and personal reflections on those experiences. Autobiography covers the author’s entire life, focusing on chronological facts and personal development.

Key Characteristics of Memoir

  • Focus: Highlights a specific part of life, such as childhood, a career, a memorable journey, or overcoming an illness, instead of telling a full life story.
  • Perspective: Written in the first person (“I”), giving readers the author’s personal and direct point of view.
  • Genre: A form of creative nonfiction that mixes real events with the author’s emotions and personal reflections.
  • Purpose: Looks at the meaning behind certain experiences and helps readers understand themes like family, love, loss, or identity.
  • Technique: Uses tools like dialogue, setting scenes, and storytelling structure to make past events feel real and engaging.
