Happy Thanksgiving to our American readers! The Bogels are enjoying a slow morning today (all four kids are still in bed as I type this) and our big plans include finishing our current reads, walking the dog, and hosting a small desserts-only gathering. I’d like to do a little bit of shopping, emphasis on little—and then I’d like to get back to reading my book and hanging with my people!
I hope you have something to look forward to this weekend, and that this collection of interesting reads and favorite things helps ease you into that weekend frame of mind.
My favorite finds from around the web:
I offer gift links for articles whenever possible (you may still need to create an account with the publication); if there’s no gift link and you’re not a subscriber, check to see if your library carries the publication or use a service like Pocket.
The Triumph of the Post-Thanksgiving Sandwich. (The New Yorker) “Leftovers, eaten the day after, or maybe late the night of, are the best part of Thanksgiving.”
The Most Coveted Screenshot in the Literary World. (Atlantic gift link) “It is the Publishers Marketplace book-deal social-media post, a screenshot of the charmingly retro-looking blurb from a publishing-industry trade website that announces the details of an author selling their book.”
Maybe it’s because Thanksgiving is late this year, but we put up our tree and started baking holiday cookies earlier than we ever have. Two family favorites are the Andes Mint Cookies and Old-Fashioned Molasses Cookies I shared in our MMD Holiday Cookie Exchange—I highly recommend checking those out (I share the recipes in those comments) and browsing the comments section for more holiday cookie happiness.
The books that shaped me: Donna edition. (MMD) Donna offers a How It Started/How It’s Going edition of the books that shaped her, reflecting on how her reading life has held steady for years in many ways and how she’s branched out.
19 Charming Winners from the Dog Photography Awards. (Popular Science) If you need a serotonin hit, this is for you. Don’t miss the photo titles!
I’m not doing much in the way of shopping today but I am definitely shopping the 30% off sale at Apotheke. Last year Will killed it at Christmas when he gave me their Charcoal Classic Candle. I burned mine up a long time ago—this year I’m buying several at a discount and trying the soap as well. (Don’t worry, Will approves!) Use code FALALA24 for the discount.
Timeless meets timely: Anne diagnoses why Ginger loves New England books. (What Should I Read Next?) The vibes are so good!
Among the Sleuths: Looking for Answers at the Nancy Drew Convention. (Literary Hub) “Sherlock Holmes is abrasive, Hercule Poirot is vain, Veronica Mars is prickly, and Nancy Drew is… the quintessential teen girl of her time, at all times.”
Last year I waited until dangerously close to party time to refresh the sparkles in my winter wardrobe and was so nervous my sequins would come in time! If you’re in the market for shiny and sparkly: I love Anthro’s Porridge Shine Glam Tee (XS–XL) and the unexpectedness of J.Crew Factory’s Sequin Tweed Schoolboy Blazer (00–24). Two years ago half our team was sporting Loft winter sparkles! I wore mine for Thanksgiving dinner; their new-for-2024 options are also gorgeous. (XXS–XXL)
The 100 Must-Read Books of 2024. (TIME) 100 “must-read” titles is ridiculous, but I couldn’t resist checking out the selections: I’ve read twenty-one, loved and adored nine, but—to my great surprise—have abandoned a full dozen of the included titles.
It’s Time For A “Cherry Mocha Girl” Winter. (Bustle) I’m definitely into the small doses of burgundy this season. (This is my favorite and it’s finally back in stock.)
In Good Company. (Texas Highways) How H-E-B became Texas’s most beloved brand. Y’all, I do NOT feel this way about my Kentucky grocery store.
If you’re into sweaters every single brand in my recent go-to sweaters post is offering big sales today. My favorite gifts to give and receive are also on sale, along with many items in our MMD Gift Guide for Book Lovers.
25 Best Christmas Towns in the U.S. (Travel + Leisure) Will you be visiting any of these festive towns?
Late addition! I almost forgot to share that one of my most-used apps is on huge sale through November 30: it’s the Paprika recipe manager app and I LOVE it. I have been using the IOS app all year and am springing for the compatible desktop version while the price is right.
Backlist goodness:
Get cozy with 25 books about “home.” A fun list full of books with “house” or “home” in the title!
The little luxuries that make you feel pampered every time you use them. For something to feel luxurious it has to be appreciated—by you.
Have a great weekend!
