Chapter 1

Launching Your Job Search Journey

Welcome to the beginning of your professional journey! If you're launching your job search journey, you’re either new to the job market or you’re looking to pivot to a new path and take on a new challenge, we’ll let me put you at ease by saying: no matter your situation, job hunting will always feel overwhelming: what company? What kind of job? What if they don’t like me? What if I don’t like them? These insecurities can create anxiety in even the strongest and most confident of us. But you’re about to overcome that by understanding that job hunting is a process:

It’s about discovering your direction, positioning yourself as a top contender, and navigating the challenges along the way. And I’m about to make it fun!

When I first started job hunting, I thought the formula was simple: scroll through job boards, send out resumes, and wait for offers to flood in. Spoiler alert—it didn’t happen that way. After weeks of hearing nothing but crickets, I realized I was approaching it all wrong. I didn’t know what I wanted, and worse, I didn’t know how to look for it effectively. It was a wake-up call.

What changed everything for me was clarity. Once I pinpointed my goals and built a strategy, the pieces started falling into place. That’s what this chapter is about—getting clear on what you want and building a plan to achieve it. And that’s what I want to share with you here.

In this chapter, we’ll explore the various avenues available for job hunting, from traditional job fairs and networking events to the expansive world of online job boards and social media. You’ll learn how to identify the right opportunities, build a robust job search strategy, and leverage your network to uncover hidden gems in the job market.

Job hunting is more than just sending out resumes; it’s about understanding what you want, where to look, and how to make the most of the resources at your disposal.
By the end of this chapter, you’ll have a clear roadmap for your job search journey, setting a strong foundation for your career.

Let’s dive in and start setting the stage for your success!

Step 1: Identifying your Career Goals:

Let’s start with the most important question: What do you want?

It’s a deceptively simple question but one that stumps so many of us. We’re conditioned to think about what’s practical or what’s available instead of what truly lights us up. I remember sitting at my desk one evening, asking myself this very question. I stared at a blank notebook for an hour, unsure of how to answer. The breakthrough came when I stopped thinking about job titles and started thinking about feelings.

What do you want your work to feel like? For me, I realized I wanted to feel challenged but not overwhelmed, collaborative but still independent, and aligned with a mission that excited me. When you frame it this way, the answers often come more easily.

Finding the perfect job can be done by working on your Ikigai.

Ikigai is a Japanese concept that means “reason for being.” It represents the intersection of four key elements in life:

  1. What you love (Passion) – Activities that bring you joy and fulfillment.
  2. What you are good at (Profession) – Skills and talents you excel in.
  3. What the world needs (Mission) – Problems you can solve or contributions you can make.
  4. What you can be paid for (Vocation) – Opportunities that provide financial stability.
