Ever feel like the world is so overwhelming that you need your reading life to just keep things calm for once? I can definitely relate. The world feels like it’s been in a constant state of chaos (can’t imagine why; let’s not get into it here), and as much as reading has always been my favorite outlet and greatest escape, it’s been hard to find the energy and motivation to read the way I’d really like to these days. In the same way that I have comfort shows I return to time and again when life gets hard, I have books and genres I’ll tend toward when my reading life feels overwhelming. Cozy reads can be a big help. Cozy fantasy romance specifically often has that perfect mix of calm easiness and fun to keep me engaged without me having to try too hard.
Maybe you need some of that cozy fantasy romance goodness right now, too. Maybe you, like me, are staring down the unflinching gaze of one of the worst book slumps of your life. Or maybe you just love a good cozy romantasy and are hoping to find your next favorite read. Either way, these nine newer cozy fantasy romance novels are exactly the balm you need.
Sit back, relax–no really, roll those shoulders back and unclench your jaw–and read some books that won’t get your nervous system going any more than it already is.
Agnes Aubert’s Mystical Cat Shelter by Heather Fawcett
The author of one of my favorite cozy fantasy romance series, Emily Wilde’s Encyclopaedia of Faeries, has penned another adorably cozy novel about an inadvertently magical cat shelter. Agnes is in desperate need of a new storefront after losing her previous location in the destructive fallout of a street fight between two magicians. She wants a place where she can care for her cats, attract potential adopters, and stay well away from magicians. Unfortunately, she doesn’t realize until it’s too late that the reclusive proprietor renting to her is also the notorious magician Havelock Renard. He’s not too thrilled to find out his new renter runs a cat shelter, either.
The Keeper of Magical Things by Julie Leong
In the newest book from the author of the charmingly cozy Teller of Small Fortunes, a lackluster would-be-mage and the biggest overachiever the Guild of Mages has ever seen team up to relocate magical objects to a safer location. The only thing Certainty and Aurelia have in common is their desire to see this job through to the end. But as they get to know the residents of Shpelling, long considered the least magical and most boring town around, they realize that the magic they’re helping the guild hoard and protect might better serve the community if it were in everyone’s hands.

Violet Thistlewaite is Not a Villain Anymore by Emily Krempholtz
After the death of Guy Shadowfade, Violet, formerly known as the Thornwitch, has a chance to remake herself outside the shadow of the dark lord who raised her. Her plant magic has always been associated with evil, but maybe if she tries using her magic for good for once, she’ll be able to make up for some of the terrible things she’s done. Rough Around the Hedges, Violet’s new plant shop, seems like the perfect place to start. If only her uptight new landlord, who runs an apothecary next door, would cut her some slack. But when a blight begins killing all the plants in town, Violet and Nathaniel will have to set aside their differences to get to the bottom of what’s plaguing Dragon’s Breath–even if Nathaniel doesn’t know who he’s really working with.
Tusk Love by Thea Guanzon
Inspired by the world of Exandria from Critical Role, Tusk Love spins a spicy tale of romance on the road. Guinevere’s life has been laid out for her. As the daughter of an ambitious merchant, she’s expected to become the dutiful wife of an overbearing lord. But Guinevere would rather lead a life of freedom and adventure than rote expectation. When bandits attack her caravan, it’s only the intervention of a half-orc named Oskar that saves her. It’s a bit more adventure than she was hoping for, really, and Oskar certainly wasn’t looking for some spoiled brat to tag along on his journey. But when sparks start to fly between them, they’ll have to decide whether to follow the paths that have been laid out for them or make a different choice.
How to Lose a Goblin in Ten Days by Jessie Sylva
When halfling Pansy decides to move into her late grandmother’s cottage, she’s shocked to find it already occupied. Even worse, the goblin who’s become the house’s self-proclaimed caretaker has filled it with dirt. When neither of them is willing to cede their claim to the cottage, they agree to a deal: whoever is the first to give up on the cottage gives up all rights to it. Good thing Pansy knows a thing or two about getting rid of goblins–or so she thinks. Soon, though, the two are enjoying each other’s company as much as arguing. But will they be able to overcome the cultural barriers between them and make this messy little cottage into a home?
The Feywild Job by C. L. Polk
Saeldian is a thief who made a magical oath to never fall in love. Kell is a charming bard and also Saeldian’s ex. Now, the two are forced to team up for a lucrative job to steal a gem called “The Kiss of Enduring Love.” Seems straightforward enough, and they’ll be able to part ways again soon without ever thinking of this awkward mission again. But it turns out their chemistry hasn’t cooled over the years, and the job isn’t nearly as simple as they thought. There are some very powerful players interested in the fey gem, and it may take more than couple’s therapy to make it out of this mission with the objective and their lives.
A Witch’s Guide to Magical Innkeeping by Sangu Mandanna
Sangu Mandanna is the queen of cozy fantasy romance novels. Her first such genre book for adult readers, The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches, is a wonderfully cozy read, and her newest novel keeps the charm going at a magical inn run by a witch and the aunt she resurrected from the dead. The spell Sera used to bring back her aunt cost her greatly. Now, she’s been banished from the magical world and has all but lost her once powerful magic. But an ancient spell book could be the solution to both her problems, if only she could find it. Luke, the inn’s grumpy new guest, is pretty sure that’s a terrible idea. Good thing Sera doesn’t care what he thinks.
The Elsewhere Express by Samantha Sotto Yamabao
There’s no way to buy a ticket for the Elsewhere Express; the fantastical train simply appears to those who need it. People like Raya, who’s given up on her dream of songwriting, and Q, an artist who’s lost his way. Together, the two explore the wonders of the Elsewhere Express as they try to find themselves again, touring jellyfish-filled bars and picnicking on lily pads. But the train has its dangers, too. A mysterious stowaway has brought with him a dark magic that could destroy the entire train. Uncovering his identity could save the Elsewhere Express, but will they also rediscover the passion they’ve lost along the way?
Bromantasy by Maire Roche
Mo Elmthorn is Juniper’s other half–platonically, speaking. Wherever Juniper falls short–tending the farm, bartering, manual labor as a whole–Mo has him covered. But when Juniper accidentally volunteers them for a dangerous quest to kill a monster, he knows he’s gone a step too far. Especially because Mo’s thighs look way too good in those adventuring trousers. Not all beasts are what they seem, though, and when they discover the monster they were meant to kill is really just a scared little girl, they find themselves on a new quest to write this world, and maybe even themselves, a better story.
