Chapter 1: The Unhappy Thief
Our story begins in the distant future, the year 2,400 in a city called No Name City 1977, or NNC1977 for short. In NNC1977, there was a boy named Joshua. He was just twelve years old, yet his eyes looked tired, as if he had seen a lot. He had messy dark hair, blue eyes, and wore a torn black t-shirt and jeans with a few holes. His days were usually hard as he wandered around the city, and he often felt hungry.
As Joshua was walking around one day, he just stood and looked at NNC1977. He could see the city was mostly a run-down city, with messed up looking streets. Plants were actually growing from roads, sidewalks and even buildings. He moved closer to one of those broken sidewalks and he could see tons of old technology junk all around as if someone took out the trash and just dumped it there. As he continued walking, he could hear the breaking of glass under his feet.
Joshua had lived in NNC1977 all his life, but even with that he could still not get used to the smell in the city, which smelled wet and damp. He looked up towards the sky and could see the sun trying to get through, but there was so much dust in the air that instead of good sunlight it gave off more of a dingy glow. Joshua looked across the street and he wondered what all of the super tall and broken buildings used to be for. The buildings were now mostly destroyed, with all sorts of old junk inside.
There were many people who lived in NNC1977, but almost all of them were poor. They lived on the streets or within some of the old buildings themselves, and they were always looking for something to eat.
Children could sometimes be seen playing, not knowing yet how tough life was in NNC1977. Nobody seemed to know or remember why the city was so destroyed, but everyone seemed to know that there were many cities around the world that were just as destroyed as NNC1977.
