Just 10 years ago, finding a wide array of LGBTQ+ YA books was difficult. Though the field still doesn’t fully represent the diversity of queer experience, it has certainly improved. This is especially true for YA books that feature trans and nonbinary voices. As YA author Ray Stoeve documents, the numbers are rising, even if the representation within those numbers in terms of diverse creators and characters, still lags behind.

So it comes as little surprise that given the smaller representation of trans and nonbinary voices in YA than the broader scope of LGBTQ+ YA, adaptations of YA books with these characters is also slower.

But readers looking for great nonbinary YA representation by a nonbinary author will be thrilled to know that they can look forward to a fresh adaptation later this year. Meet the trailer for Mason Deaver’s I Wish You All The Best, directed by Tommy Dorfman, who also wrote the screenplay:

I Wish You All The Best follows Ben after they’re kicked out of their family home for coming out as nonbinary. They move in with their estranged sister and enroll in a new school, where an eccentric art teacher helps Ben re-develop their confidence and find meaningful relationships in their new life.

The adaptation will hit theaters on November 7. This YA adaptation marks an important milestone in storytelling and in representation–it is among the few LGBTQ+ YA adaptations to hit screens and looks to be the first starring a nonbinary main character.
