Crash Landing by Delvin Chatterson
An immersive crime thriller that readers will be captivated by from the very beginning.
“Was Hunter in danger again as an innocent bystander? Or was he just a good liar?”
Crash Landing, book five in the Dale Hunter thriller series by Delvin Chatterson, comes hot on the heels of Bad Boys in Boston. These fast-paced novels follow business owner Dale Hunter as his work leads him to brushes with a dark world of crime. This time, his business, his family, and his freedom are all at risk as he’s implicated in a crime he swears he has nothing to do with… or does he?
Public Pressure, Private Pain
In the rapidly-evolving world of computers in the 1990s, Dale Hunter’s business 3D Computer Products is struggling to stay afloat. His business associate, Bobbie Brydon, seems to be causing more harm than help. Then one night, a deadly event turns everything on its head. Lisa Brydon, Bobbie’s daughter, comes running, announcing that Bobbie has shot himself in his office.
But as soon as the officers arrive on the scene, they know something is amiss. “‘Obviously a suicide, don’t you think?’ [Dale] looked from one detective to the other. ‘Maybe too obvious,’ said Samson.” Brydon was left-handed, after all — but the gun and gunshot wound were on his right side. Either Bobbie Brydon was ambidextrous, or the killer made a rookie mistake.
Dale handles the crisis in a detached, professional demeanor — he’s all business. It’s a tragedy, at worst, but with Brydon out of the way, it could be Dale’s best opening to get his business back on track.
He isn’t afraid to admit that he didn’t get along well with Brydon — tolerated him, mostly — and they’d had an argument that evening. What he doesn’t realize is that saying this puts a target on his back, and he becomes the number one murder suspect.
Both Dale’s business and home life require all his attention, with his wife’s recent breast cancer diagnosis and two kids at home. But when he’s called in to talk to the detective for some follow-up questions, Dale realizes he needs to shift focus to the accusations directed at him. After all, what would his clients and family think of him if they knew he was accused of being a murderer?
The Search for a Real Suspect
Lucky for Dale, there’s Frank the Fixer, who devoted fans will recognize from the previous book, Bad Boys in Boston. If Frank can find a real suspect to point a finger at, Dale is off the hook. But Brydon had a lot of enemies, and pinning down a viable suspect to send the police after is going to take work.
As Frank, reporters and detectives dive into the mystery, more and more secrets are uncovered, which only brings more questions to the surface. Could it really have been just a suicide, or could it be murder? But who wanted Brydon dead? A gold-digging ex-wife? An angry business partner? The debt-collecting local Mafia?
And can they solve it before someone else gets caught in the crossfire?
Readers will have no trouble easing into the Dale Hunter books this late in the game, as Chatterson fills in all necessary details for new readers. But they’ll be better off starting with the first book to get the full portrait of Dale Hunter, his adventures, and his history with the world of organized crime.
An Immersive, Captivating Thriller
As a businessman himself, author Delvin Chatterson doesn’t shy away from diving into the nitty-gritty of Dale’s day-to-day running 3D Computer Products. From the ins and outs of managing a business to the challenges of keeping the whole thing afloat, to negotiating with partners, banks and lawyers, Chatterson creates a vivid and detailed story rooted in reality.
He also makes sure to include a bit of the Québec charm, with a taste of the language and mentions of local cafés, restaurants and scenery.
Crash Landing is an immersive crime thriller that readers will be captivated by from the very beginning. Filled with potential suspects, red herrings and multiple leads to be chased, Delvin Chatterson keeps readers guessing up until he sticks the landing with an epic final reveal.
And have no fear — this isn’t the last we’ll see of Dale Hunter. Book six, Whatever it Takes, is up next, with a tagline that warns: trust nobody. Is that foreboding message a reminder for Dale Hunter, or for the reader? You’ll have to wait and find out.
