This is the time of year when most Americans are thinking about buying textbooks rather than comic books. For a lot of us, August represents both the dog days of summer and summer’s last gasp as the little ones get ready to head back to school and us big ones need to start gearing ourselves up for more autumnal chores, like raking leaves and seeing if our coats can hold up another year.

But as you’re shopping for backpacks and digging the rake out of the garage, don’t forget to schedule a little reading time. I promise, this month’s new comics and graphic novels are well worth the effort! You want mysteries? We’ve got mysteries galore! There are also more light-hearted adventure stories and even an anthology that is just perfect for Hispanic Heritage Month (that’s September 15-October 15— don’t worry, you haven’t missed it).

Whether you’re dreading summer’s end or can’t kick it out the door fast enough, reading is always a great way to pass the time. I assume I don’t have to tell you that— what are you doing on a site called Book Riot if you don’t recognize the value of books?! —but sometimes, we all need a reminder that it’s okay to relax and unwind, even if the official Relax and Unwind season is about to end.
