Today is the start of the Trans Rights Readathon! It runs from March 17th to March 31st, the Trans Day of Visibility. The readathon aims to “read and uplift books written by and/or featuring trans, nonbinary, 2Spirit, and gender-nonconforming authors and characters.”

That means not just reading books by and/or about trans people, but also amplifying those books by making content about them as well as monetarily supporting the trans community. This is a decentralized fundraiser, so the organizers encourage you to get involved locally, support mutual aid funds, start your own fundraiser, give to GoFundMe campaigns, etc. They also recommend Point of Pride and Transgender Law Center.

There is also a StoryGraph challenge with prompts. You can look there for recommendations for each prompt, and the Trans Rights Readathon also has resources on their website, including a list of hundreds of trans books sortable by genre, format, age category, etc. You can follow them on Instagram, too.

Today, I have eight new books by and/or about trans people to add to your readathon TBR, including romance, a graphic novel, a memoir, YA fantasy, and YA sci-fi.

All Access members can find a bonus list of new queer books out this week at the end.

 A Novel by TJ Alexander

A Lady for All Seasons by TJ Alexander

From the author of Chef’s Kiss and A Gentleman’s Gentleman comes the queer and trans Regency romance we’ve been waiting for. Verbena’s family is in ruins, and she’s forced to secure their future by marrying. Luckily, she has a solution: a lavender marriage with her very queer friend Étienne. When the poet Flora publishes verses hinting at her knowledge of their scheme, it puts the arrangement at risk. Verbena confronts her—only to be unexpectedly charmed by Flora. What Verbena doesn’t know is that Flora is also the struggling novelist William, who sets out to woo Verbena. This looks like a delightful Regency romp with a genderfluid main character!

As Old As Thyme by Alix Nicoud

Brunehaut is a bisexual trans woman who brews abortion and transition potions—despite the village’s suspicion over her work. The tentative trust she’s built with them is threatened when her childhood friend re-emerges in her life: Théoderic is a gray aro/ace trans guy who peddles snake oil. Despite initially butting heads, they can’t help but pick up their childhood friendship where it left off.

Chicken Heart cover

Chicken Heart by Morgan Boecher

Jackie Locklear is a stand-up comedian who is grieving his aunt Shelia and struggling to accept his trans identity. Sheila founded the Chicken Heart Love Commune, a refuge for trans people, and Jackie decides it’s the best place for him to process his emotions. At first, he feels like an outsider, as a city kid who is not yet comfortable with his transness. Over time, though, he’s able to make space for himself and reach out to the other residents.

A Body Made Home cover

A Body Made Home: They Black Trans Love by K. Marshall Green

This is a “memoir and mythography of a Black trans man’s journey from Baby Girl to Black Boi, through gender, race, and trans theory made personal.” K. Marshall Green continues in the tradition of Audre Lorde by combining his memoir with writing about the kinds of bodies and love that are rejected by the mainstream. He also explores how Black queer people make a home while in America, where their bodily safety is continually threatened.

This Wretched Beauty book cover

This Wretched Beauty by Elle Grenier

Feiwel & Friends’ Remix series has had so many great hits for me (especially Travelers Along the Way and Most Ardently). This new addition to the series reimagines Dorian Gray as a young trans person, trapped under her grandfather’s thumb as heir to his estate. When she meets a painter who sees her for who she is and introduces her to the world of molly houses and drag, she sees a new possible future for herself for the first time. But if she doesn’t choose to take this new future by both hands, she may just become the very worst of what her family wants her to be. —Rachel Brittain

How (Not) to Conjure a Boyfriend cover

How (Not) to Conjure a Boyfriend by Jordon Greene

Kenzie is a nonbinary kitchen witch who casts a loves spell on their crush, Hayden, only to have him slip and fall… into a coma. When Kenzie visits him at the hospital, they tell the nurse that Hayden is their boyfriend. It was just to convince the nurse to let them in, but now Hayden’s family thinks they’re dating, and Kenzie doesn’t even know whether Hayden is straight. To make things even more complicated, now that Kenzie is spending more time with Hayden’s family, they might just be falling for Hayden’s brother. (It’s a witchy YA While You Were Sleeping!)

Queen of Faces cover

Queen of Faces by Petra Lord

In this dark academia YA fantasy, Anabelle Gage is trapped inside a rotting body. Her plan is to gain admittance to the Paragon Academy, which offers a new chassis to all students. When she fails, she resorts to stealing a healthy body—and is caught. To avoid execution, she takes the only other offer available to her: becoming a mercenary for the Paragon Academy. She will have to team up with an assassin and bombmaker to survive.

This sapphic fantasy by a trans author has gotten starred reviews from Publishers Weekly and School Library Journal!

Time-Tripping Over You cover

Time-Tripping Over You by Brennon Lane

Silas is a reluctant time traveler: he keeps getting thrown back in time, forced to relive hours or days in his pre-transition body. He’s sure he’s a unique scientific anomaly—until he meets Jude, who has the same symptoms. Jude has met a future version of Silas, and he says that they need to work together to fix their problem. The more time they spend together, the closer they become, but just as a solution comes into sight, Jude begins to question whether it might be better to change the past instead and save both of them heartache. (Jude is also on the aro/ace spectrum.)
