Yesterday was International Nonbinary People’s Day, which seems like as good an excuse as any to talk about some great new books by nonbinary authors out this year! This isn’t a complete list, of course: it’s just a sampling of the incredible books by and about nonbinary people out in 2025.
I have for you a spicy friends-to-lovers romance with a nonbinary main character, a fantasy book about trans and nonbinary witches fighting an evil AI, a nonbinary lesbian sci-fi heist, a bi4bi apocalyptic YA thriller with a genderqueer main character, and a memoir about moving through trauma.

My Best Friend’s Honeymoon by Meryl Wilsner
The author of Mistakes Were Made, Something to Talk About, and Cleat Cute is back with a new queer romance, this time with a nonbinary main character! Elsie has been engaged to her college boyfriend for a year when she learns he’s planned their wedding and honeymoon, and it’s happening in a week. Surprise! That’s the wake-up call she needed to realize she never wanted this marriage, and now she’s off to that non-refundable Caribbean honeymoon with her best friend, Ginny. Ginny has been in love with her for more than a decade, and they make Elsie a deal to encourage her to speak up for herself more: for this week, Elsie can have anything she asks for. Ginny just wasn’t expecting Elsie to ask for them. As you’d expect from that magnificent cover, this one is spicy!
Awakened by A.E. Osworth
When I heard that Awakened was about a coven of trans witches that fight an evil AI, it immediately rose to the top of my most-anticipated list. I’m happy to say it lived up to those expectations, from its dedication—”For everyone who feels betrayed by J.K. Rowling”—to its final page. The whimsical narrator makes for a fun contrast to the cynical main character, who is reluctantly adjusting to their new powers. Each member of this coven is complex and multifaceted, making their slow progression into a chosen family feel satisfying and realistic. Yes, this is a fantastic read for ex-Harry Potter fans, but it’s so much more than that.
Hammajang Luck by Makana Yamamoto
This nonbinary lesbian sci-fi heist is “Ocean’s 8 meets Blade Runner“. Edie has spent the last eight years on an icy prison planet after being betrayed by their partner in crime Angel. As soon as Edie gets out from behind bars, Angel appears again, offering them a chance for one last job that will set them up for life. What could go wrong? This has been one of the big queer books of the year—who can resist a heist in space with a lesbian and nonbinary crew?
Roar of the Lambs by Jamison Shea (August 26)
I loved Jamison Shea’s sapphic YA horror book I Feed Her to the Beast and the Beast Is Me so much that I knew I’d have to read anything they wrote next. Roar of the Lambs is a bi4bi apocalyptic YA thriller with a genderqueer main character. Winnie is a teen psychic who lies to clients at the oddities shop to give them reassuring readings—they pay better that way. When she finds a box made of bone in the ashes of her childhood home, it shows her a vision of an apocalyptic future—one where she and two rich kids, Apollo and Cyrus Rathbun, are at the center. Together, she and Apollo investigate what Apollo’s cousin Cyrus is up to, and how they can prevent the box’s prophecy from coming true.
sorry i keep crying during sex: a memoir by jesse james rose (October 21)
If you’re on the queer side of TikTok, you already know Jesse James Rose. They’re an actor, activist, writer, and content creator with a big online following. This is her first book, a literary and experimental memoir written in”lists, theatrical scripts, flashbacks, and Grindr DMs”. sorry i keep crying during sex explores trauma, assault, healing, and caretaking as a twentysomething trans person.
