Are you feral for shifter romance books? A shortened term for shapeshifter, shifter romance books feature at least one character who has both a human and a non-human form they can shift between. This includes but is not limited to wolves, cats, bears, foxes, dragons, horses, and birds. Sometimes shifters are called weres (i.e., werewolf, werebear, etc.) from the Old English “wer” or man. I’ve also included gumiho in my shifter romances because they are fox spirits that can shift into a human form.

Historically, shifters have been objects of desire in myth, legend, and stories at large. My favorite examples come from Marie de France’s medieval lais, with the hawk knight shifter in “Yonec” and the werewolf knight shifter in “Bisclavret.” The aforementioned Korean gumiho has similarities with the Chinese jiuweihu and Japanese kitsune, as nine-tailed foxes have made appearances across legends.

Sometimes shifters represent a beast hidden behind human facades, sometimes shifters are beings so noble they can maintain their humanity even as they take their animal form. These days, shifter romance books give authors the ability to explore the bounds and benefits of transformation. It tests characters who question whether another person can love and accept all parts of them. I eat it up every time.

So maybe it’s no surprise that I went a bit overboard with my recommendations. I promise these shifter romance books will have you growling for more.
